Venus Williams still perfectly remembers her “dramatic battle” against Martina Hingis in Warsaw nearly two decades ago. In 2006, Williams and Hingis met in the Warsaw second round. After winning the first set, Hingis also went up by an early break in the second round.
But Williams impressively recovered to beat Hingis 4-6 7-5 6-4. “I had full lower body cramps in this match! It was dramatic. We always had the craziest battles,” Williams tweeted.

Ex-coach thinks Williams will retire at the US Open
Rick Macci, who was famously Venus and Serena Williams’ childhood coach, thinks 42-year-old Venus will play the final tournament of her career at this year’s US Open. Not only that Macci thinks Venus will play the final tournament of her career at Flushing Meadows, he also thinks the seven-time Grand Slam champion will team up with her sister Serena for doubles.
“I think it’s difficult for Venus Williams. When I had Venus and Serena, it was more about Venus. Because she was older as you saw in the King Richard movie. Venus was really, really like my daughter and we had an amazing bond.
In my opinion, and I don’t have any insight, I think she’ll retire at the US Open. I think that she’ll play doubles with Serena. And I think they’re going to exit the stage left at the US Open,” Macci told Tennis-Infinity. After competing in just four tournaments in 2022, Venus Williams kicked off her 2023 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland.
In Auckland, Williams started her campaign with a win over Katie Volynets. But in the next match, Williams suffered a hamstring injury before suffering a three-set defeat to Zhu Lin. Williams has been sidelined ever since but she has recently hinted that she would like to play during the clay season.
