Stefanos Tsitsipas says the United States needs to get themselves a proper red clay surface. After a win over Nicolas Jarry in the Monte Carlo round-of-16, Tsitsipas shared an interesting message. “Clay court in the US is like a unicorn on a skateboard,” Tsitsipas wrote on the camera lens.
The United States hosts one ATP clay tournament – it took place last week in Houston. The green clay courts in Houston are considered one of the fastest clay courts on the Tour. But Tsitsipas isn’t really a fan of the United States having a bit of non-traditional clay courts.
Tsitsipas explains his US clay tournaments shade
“I think it’s quite clear. I don’t have to further explain what’s going on. It’s a way of life, it’s a lifestyle. You have it at old country clubs. It’s such a traditional surface in Europe.
I just wish we would see more claycourts in the US. I know it’s not traditional there. What is it? Grey? Some call it grey, some green. You see that’s also another controversial thing over there. I see grey, some other people see green.
But I’d love to see a tournament in the US on the red clay. Absolutely,” Tsitsipas said on Tennis Channel. Meanwhile, Tsitsipas enjoyed a great day at the office against Jarry as he defeated the Chilean 6-3 6-4. Tsitsipas routinely handled Jarry and afterward was happy with his performance.
“I had to deal with a few [tough] points, especially when he had break points. I dealt with those situations very maturely and played precisely, so it was great out there,” Tsitsipas said. The clay courts of Monte Carlo have been absolutely great for Tsitsipas in recent years.
In 2021, Tsitsipas became a Masters champion after beating Andrey Rublev in the Monte Carlo final. Last year, Tsitsipas won back-to-back Monte Carlo titles after beating Alexander Zverev in the final. Now, Tsitsipas is aiming a Monte Carlo three-peat.
