In the bottom of the ninth inning of Sunday’s 4-1 win over the Tigers, Adam Duvall exited the game after he injured his left wrist on a diving play attempt in the outfield.
On Monday, the Red Sox announced that X-rays confirmed a distal radius fracture in his left wrist. There is not currently an estimate for Duvall’s return as the team gathers more information. However, fractures generally take four to six weeks to heal. Duvall was placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday, with infielder Bobby Dalbec recalled from Triple-A Worcester as a corresponding move.
Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson hit a shot to center field and Duvall’s glove seemed to get stuck in the grass as he attempted to lay out for the catch. Duvall got up holding his left wrist, the same one that required season-ending surgery last July when he was with the Braves.
“He almost made a spectacular play,” left fielder Rob Refsnyder said. “That’s a big guy out there. I don’t think people really realize how big he is and how fast he moves. Looks like he was fully extended.”
Raimel Tapia replaced Duvall in center field.
Duvall has had a great start to the season, batting .455 with four homers and 14 RBIs in his first eight games with the Red Sox, and being named the AL Player of the Week for the week of April 3.
