Former British doubles star Peter Fleming thinks Andy Murray is still a threat on grass but added he doesn’t consider the three-time Grand Slam champion as a top favorite for the Wimbledon title. Murray, 35, hasn’t had any Grand Slam victories since 2016 Wimbledon.
Murray kicked off his grass season by reaching the Stuttgart final and it is not a secret that he is hoping to clinch a big result at Wimbledon. Fleming, who works for the BBC as a commentator, named Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Matteo Berrettini as the players who have bigger chances of winning Wimbledon.
“I think that Andy is a danger, he is definitely the sort of guy that nobody is going to want to play, but to expect him to win seven matches, best of five sets, that is asking a lot at this point don’t you think?” Fleming said.
“I would put [Novak] Djokovic above him, if [Rafael] Nadal plays he goes up there. I wouldn’t put him above [Matteo] Berrettini.”
Fleming: Nobody will want to play Murray
Murray won’t be a seeded player at Wimbledon and Fleming feels no player will want to meet the two-time Wimbledon champion early on.
“I don’t think that it matters that much whether he is seeded or not because he has played all these matches, he should be sharp going into his first-round match,” Fleming added. “If he had to play a seed in the first round, nobody is going to want to have to do that.
No one is going to want to play him, so if he wins that match, because he would expect to beat a lot of seeds, now he is right in the seeds draw. If you are going to go deep you are going to have to beat a seed at some point”.
Murray hasn’t had any deep Grand Slam runs since reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinal in 2017. It remains to be seen how far can Murray go at Wimbledon this year.
